COVID-19 Support Programs

The Government of Canada is offering multiple support programs to cater to the needs of all Canadians, both individuals and businesses affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. Find the latest updates, eligibilities and more here!

SUPPORT FOR INDIVIDUALS

Employment Insurance (EI)

CRA made temporary changes to the Employment Insurance program. As of September 27, 2020, the minimum benefit rate is $500 per week before taxes in most cases.

SUPPORT FOR INDIVIDUALS

Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB)

The CRB provides $500 per week for up to 26 weeks for workers who have stopped working or had their income reduced by at least 50% due to COVID-19, and who are not eligible for Employment Insurance (EI).

SUPPORT FOR INDIVIDUALS

Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB)

The CRSB provides $500 per week for up to a maximum of two weeks, for workers who:

  • Are unable to work for at least 50% of the week because they contracted COVID-19
  • Are self-isolated for reasons related to COVID-19
  • have underlying conditions, are undergoing treatments or have contracted other sicknesses that, in the opinion of a medical practitioner, nurse practitioner, person in authority, government or public health authority, would make them more susceptible to COVID-19.

SUPPORT FOR INDIVIDUALS

Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB)

The CRCB provides $500 per week for up to 26 weeks per household for workers:

  • unable to work for at least 50% of the week because they must care for a child under the age of 12 or family member because schools, day-cares or care facilities are closed due to COVID-19
  • because the child or family member is sick and/or required to quarantine or is at high risk of serious health implications because of COVID-19.

SUPPORT FOR BUSINESSES

Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS)

CEWS can cover up to 75% of an employee’s wages for qualifying eligible employers. The subsidy amount a business get per employee is based on the business’ revenue drop. This program has been extended to June 2021.

The wage subsidy does not renew automatically. Each period, you must confirm that you’re eligible and calculate your amount according to that period’s rules before you apply.

As of February 1, 2021, the following are the periods you can apply for:

  • Period 6: Aug 2 to Aug 29, 2020
  • Period 7: August 30 to September 26, 2020
  • Period 8: September 27 to October 24, 2020
  • Period 9: October 25 to November 21, 2020
  • Period 10: November 22 to December 19, 2020
  • Period 11: December 20, 2020 to January 16, 2021

The deadline to apply is 180 days after the end of the claim period.

SUPPORT FOR BUSINESSES

Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA)

The CEBA provides interest-free, partially forgivable, loans of up to $60,000, to small businesses and not-for-profits, that have experienced diminished revenues due to COVID-19 but face ongoing non-deferrable costs, such as rent, utilities, insurance, taxes and wages. A total of $20,000 will be forgiven if the balance of the loan is repaid by December 31, 2022. Business owners can apply for support until March 31, 2021 through their banks and credit unions.

SUPPORT FOR BUSINESSES

Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS)

The CERS provides a direct and easy-to-access rent and mortgage subsidy of up to 65% of eligible expenses to qualifying businesses, charities and non-profits. This support is available directly to tenants.

Lockdown Support 

Qualifying organizations that have been significantly restricted by a mandatory public health order issued by a qualifying public health authority can receive an additional 25% of rent support through the Lockdown Support.

The combined effect of the rent subsidy and the Lockdown Support is that hard-hit businesses, non-profits and charities subject to a lockdown can receive rent support of up to 90%.

The rent subsidy and the Lockdown Support are available until June 2021.
